If you're embarking on your CFI initial training, one of the most essential resources you'll create is your CFI Binder. Often referred to as the "CFI Bible," this binder will be your go-to reference during your check ride and instructing career. As a dynamic document, it will evolve as your experience grows, adapting to your changing needs as a flight instructor.

01 Ace the Written Tests

Your first step is to tackle the Fundamentals of Instruction (FOI) and Flight Instructor Airplane (FIA) exams. We recommend using Sheppard Air because it has proven effective in helping candidates achieve high scores. Consider also taking the Advanced Ground Instructor (AGI) test if you aim for a Gold Seal on your Flight Instructor Certificate someday.

02 Build Your CFI Binder

Your CFI Binder is critical to your journey. There are two common approaches: one emphasizes building the binder to deepen your understanding, while the other involves customizing a pre-made binder. Practicing your presentation skills is more valuable than wasting time assembling your binder. That's why we provide our students with a CFI Binder that's 80% complete—add your personal touches.

03 Book Your DPE Early

Securing a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE) for your CFI check ride can be challenging, with wait times often extending 3-6 months. Ask your school to book your DPE before you begin training to avoid delays and additional costs. If they can't, we can help. Our unique relationship with DPEs ensures our students know their check ride date before starting training, with no deposit required.

04 Choose the Right School and Instructor

Selecting a flight school with CFI training experience is crucial to your success. Look for a school with a strong track record and instructors with at least two years of experience who have previously endorsed CFI candidates. We have extensive experience preparing CFI candidates at Fredrickson Aviation, with more monthly endorsements than many schools achieve in a year. This expertise dramatically enhances your chances of passing your check ride.

05 Master Ground School

 Instructors often overlook ground school, but it's vital for passing the CFI oral exam. At Fredrickson Aviation, we take a different approach. We offer a comprehensive CFI Boot Camp, where students receive one-on-one training via Zoom in five three-hour sessions. The Boot Camp culminates in a 2.5-hour mock oral exam with a "DPE," preparing students thoroughly for their check ride. Our 90% success rate on the oral portion speaks to the effectiveness of our approach.
